Dal Dhokli

We always try to keep homemade meals healthy and hence we don't bother going a mile extra while preparing food for our family. But on sundays specially we too need a break from long kitchen marathons. So yesterday I made this Dal dhokli for a lazy sunday lunch.

Dal Dhokli is a traditional gujarati dish. It is a one pot meal with all proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins together. Dal dhokli is actually uncooked roti pieces cooked in gujarati arhar dal. It has slightly sweet and spicy flavour.

Dal dhokli can be served for lunch as well as dinner. It is wholesome, tasty and quickly made. I personally like to add bottle gourd (lauki/dudhi) and green peas to Dal dhokli. Adding these vegetables makes the dish even more filling. I also love to add some cashews and raisins to make it extra special and delicious.

Method

For Dhokli
  • Knead the whole wheat flour dough adding all ingredients for dhokli. The dough should be soft.
  • Let it rest for 5 -10 minutes.
  • While the dough is resting prepare the dal.
For Dal
  • Take one cup boiled dal and blend it fine with a hand whisk or a blender.
  • In a deep pan heat ghee and add mustard, jeera, hing, cloves, black pepper, cinnamon, bay leaf and dry whole red chilli. Saute them for half a minute.
  • Now add salt, curry leaves, turmeric powder and red chilli powder. Also add in the peas, lauki and peanuts. Let it cook for a minute.
  • Now add about one cup of water to the dal, jaggery or sugar, kokum and let it boil on medium flame.
For Dal Dhokli
Dhokli
  • As your dal is boiling on the stove, take a big dough ball and make a thin roti out of it by applying some dry flour on your counter.
  • Cut the roti into small squares to make the dhoklis. (refer the image)
  • Put these dhoklis in the boiling dal and let them cook for about 10-12 minutes. Also add the dry fruits(cashew and raisins)
  • As the dhoklis get cooked in the dal, the dal might get thickened so you can add more water if required. It should have soup like consistency when served. Also adjust the salt content accordingly.
  • Once the dhokli is cooked garnish it with coriander.
Serving Suggestions
  • Always serve dal dhokli hot.
  • You can drizzle some ghee and lemon juice on it before serving.
  • Accompany it with papad and mango pickle.
Try it on some sunday and share your experience in the comment section below.

Till then
