Peanut Chutney
I am always inquisitive about chutneys. In Indian cuisine there are countless varieties. I keep trying one or the other, as chutneys not only enhance the taste of the main dish but is also a source of more or less fresh cooked and uncooked ingredients boosting our health.
A few days back I made Adai (a kind of Dosa) and peanut chutney. Both turned out so good that I could not resist clicking and posting it here. I am sharing with you the peanut chutney recipe now. It is easy and made with ingredients normally we stock up in our pantry. Adai Dosa recipe shall follow this post.
Let's talk about peanuts first. These little cuties are not nuts but are legumes packed with lots of health benefits. They are rich in vitamins and minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, copper and manganese. I remember growing it in our kitchen garden when we were young. It was such a wonderful moment when we along with our father used to unroot the plant and eat fresh peanuts.
Let's hop onto the recipe now.
Peanut Chutney
Ingredients
3/4th Cup Peanuts/Groundnuts
2 tsp Oil
1 tsp Urad Dal
1 tsp Chana Dal
1 Green Chilli
Small Piece of Tamarind
Half cup Water
Salt to taste
For Tempering
2 tsp Oil
1 tsp Mustard
Pinch of Asafoetida
1 tsp Urad dal
1 Dry red chilli
Few Curry leaves
Method
- Dry Roast peanuts till they are fragrant. Remove skin and set aside.
- In a small pan heat 2 tsp oil. When the oil is warm add Urad Dal and Chana dal to it.
- Roast them on medium flame till slightly golden. Add the green chilli and stir it just for few seconds. Keep this aside.
- In a Chutney Jar add in the peanuts and roasted dals with the chilli. Also add salt and tamarind.
- Grind the mixture. Now add water and grind to fine paste.
- Transfer the chutney to serving bowl.
For tempering
- In a small pan heat 2 tsp oil.
- When the oil is hot add the mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add the urad dal and roast till golden.
- Add asafoetida, curry leaves and red chilli. Stir for 2 -3 seconds and spread the tempering on the chutney.

Tip: You can use garlic if you like its taste in this chutney. About two cloves will be good for mentioned quantity of chutney. Roast them along with green chilli and grind together.
